Creativity is a lantern in the dark, casting light not on what is, but on what could be. It’s not about looking into the future like a fortune teller with a crystal ball; it’s about stepping into a realm where ideas float spontaneously, waiting to be molded into something real. For creatives, this world is our home, and we roam it freely.
Imagine standing at the edge of a vast, unexplored ocean. The shore stretches behind you, but your eyes are fixed on the horizon. You’ve never sailed these waters, yet, somehow, you know exactly where your ship will dock. This is what it’s like to be a creative, it is to see the destination long before the voyage begins.
Take me, for example. The moment I embark on a creative process, I employ a special kind of imagination. I close my eyes and picture the completed piece, immersing myself in its presence. I don't just see it; I live it. It’s similar to stepping into a dream where everything is tangible and real. That moment of creation feels like falling headfirst into this ocean of imagination. Before I lift a pen or brush, I close my eyes and let the current pull me in. I see the final masterpiece as clearly as the sun rising on the horizon. The colors dance, the textures sing beneath my fingertips, and the melodies ripple through the air. It’s not a vague daydream; it’s a vivid, living world that I step into. And once I’ve been there, the real journey begins, following a course back to shore, bringing what I’ve seen to life.
However, the challenge doesn't end there. Around 80% of this transformative journey involves explaining our vision to others, whether it's clients, colleagues, or audiences. Here lies the core of our struggle. Communicating the intangible, the yet to be physical, to people who rely only on the physical for understanding. This step requires patience, expression, and, most importantly, trust. But the seas are rarely calm. There’s a moment every creator knows well, the moment we must drop anchor and share this unfamiliar world with others. Translating the intangible into something others can grasp.
It’s like trying to describe the taste of salt to someone who’s never seen the ocean. We must speak in metaphors, paint with words, and convey emotions with gestures, hoping our listeners will catch glimpses of the waves we’ve seen.
And that’s where trust comes in. Trust is the wind that fills our sails. When those around us, whether collaborators or an audience, believe in the vision we describe, the wind blows strong and steady. It allows us to steer our ship without hesitation, knowing they’ll meet us on the other shore.
With trust, the voyage becomes an adventure rather than a struggle. Instead of being swept off path by constant explanations or justifications, we ride the wind and waves freely. Every stroke of the brush, every note played, every word written becomes a part of the journey toward what we already know exists, the perfect realization of what was once only imagined.
In the end, creative vision is like a map only we can read. It leads us from the first spark of an idea to the completed masterpiece. But it’s not just about arriving; it’s about the journey. It is the winds, the waves, the trust we place in ourselves and those who sail alongside us.
So, the next time you witness a piece of art, remember that it was first dreamed, lived, and then carefully communicated, all so you could experience the magic that began in the mind of a creative soul.
